Xaver the Monkey

I have some down time today so I figured I would post a few photos on the blog. Nothing new to report other than that we have a new mascot, Xaver. One of the German Military Observers bought him for 30 Sudanese pounds. It's about $15 Canadian. He is slowly getting used to us, but some people think we should set him free or hand him over to Wildlife Protection. Problem is if we do either he will get eaten or be stuck in a cage. Different standards here. Oh yeah, and by eat, I am referring to the locals. They believe that the brain of the monkey has very strong healing qualities. They eat the meat as well. Another snack is a type of termite like insect with wings. They pull of the wings and fry them in oil. I haven't tried either of them...yet.
On the topic of food, I found a local bakery that bakes some pretty good bread that you can pick up in the afternoon straight out of the brick oven. I also found some local pastries called "mendazis". For the Portuguese out there they look and taste exactly like "sonhos".
That's all for now.
Cheers,
Gonzo.

Wow, it really is like you're back in time! That brick oven is probably alot like the one that used to be on "Rua do Forno" when Mom and Dad were kids. I'm taking them to the airport tomorrow. What a send off today with the Spanish Win! Viva Espana! (Thanks to grandma giving us some Spanish blood we are able to have some bragging rights!) Natalie loves the photos of Xaver. (Didn't tell her the other part!LOL!) Quite a group you're working with there. Love all the photos! Especially the ones with you in them of course. You sound excited to finally be working. I'm sure you are well respected by the locals. keep safe.
Mom giggles when she thinks of Xaver, cause it's all you constantly asked for as a kid! We all had a laugh at your expense today, sorry....

Luv, from all of us here.XOXOXOXOX

Hi Rory,

I watched Anthony Bourdain munch on those termites in an episode of "No Reservations". Of course,he's the kind of guy who'll eat things like reindeer puke if it'll spike the ratings.

I enjoyed your report on meat selection; it reminds me of some of my own travels. It's a wakeup call for those of us who are only accustomed to having our meat delivered to us on styrofoam trays shrink-wrapped in plastic. Everyone should visit an abbatoir or a small village in a third world country at least once. Your blog is a great gift to all of us, Rory. Take care and stay real.
